Piazza di Spagna Steps Rules
If you get off at Spagna station and take a short walk down the hill, you’ll come across the famous Spanish Steps, where Audrey Hepburn once sat. For a long time people would stop in Rome, find the Spanish Steps and grab a gelato from Audrey Hepburn’s spot on the Spanish Steps, like a scene from a Roman holiday film. However, in order to protect the cultural heritage, eating gelato on the Spanish Steps has been banned and there are always police patrolling the area to warn off eaters.
However, as I was writing this post, I googled and found something even more surprising. As you can see in the photo below, the Spanish Steps have always been a popular place for travellers to sit and take in the view of the Plaza de España and its surroundings. Be warned, however, that there are now rules against sitting on the Plaza de España in order to further protect the cultural heritage. If you’re caught sitting on the steps, you’ll be fined 250 euros.
For reference, if you eat or spill gelato on the Spanish Steps, the fine is said to be up to 400 euros. I’ll leave the adventure for now and just take some pictures of the pretty scenery.
