A journey to discover Switzerland’s hidden spring treasures

When March arrives, the high peaks of the Swiss Alps remain covered in snow, but valleys and lakeshores begin to pulse with the first signs of spring. Melting snow creates crystal-clear streams, and meadows transform with wildflowers. Switzerland’s spring offers perhaps the most dramatic seasonal transition of any country.
In this article, I’ll introduce you to the spring walks across Switzerland that I’ve personally experienced. From hidden gems loved by locals to famous attractions with unique spring charm, I invite you to experience the special magic of Swiss spring.
Zurich in Spring: Perfect Harmony of City and Nature
In Switzerland’s largest city, spring carries special significance. As winter’s chill retreats, the entire city regains its vitality. The best place to experience Zurich‘s spring is undoubtedly around Lake Zurich.
The lakeside promenade stretching from Zürichhorn on the east to Bürkliplatz on the west provides the perfect spring date. This approximately 3 km path offers viewpoints showcasing both the gentle waves of the lake and Alpine peaks in the distance. From late March, tulips and daffodils bloom along the path, adding a vibrant atmosphere.
The sunset viewed from Seebad Enge Park offers a picture-perfect landscape. The red glow cast across the lake with Alpine silhouettes creates a view unique to Zurich. The park’s restaurant serves local “Riesling-Silvaner” wine with cheese fondue, providing the perfect conclusion to your walk.
In the city center, explore the Niederdorf district with its preserved old-town character. Small cafes and boutique shops run by locals busily prepare for spring between narrow alleys and medieval buildings. The view of the Limmat River and old town from Lindenhof Hill is Zurich’s hidden treasure.
Bruno Weber Sculpture Park: Where Art Meets Nature
Located about 30 minutes by car from Zurich, Bruno Weber Park is Switzerland’s hidden gem. Designed and created by renowned Swiss artist Bruno Weber (1931-2011), this park reflects his imagination as a tangible fantasy world.
When spring arrives, the entire park awakens with renewed vitality. The dormant garden comes alive, and colorful flowers bloom around sculptures, creating an even more fantastic atmosphere. The view of the Limmat Valley from the “Dragon Terrace” is particularly magnificent under the warm spring sunshine.
In the park’s “Water Garden,” you can explore Weber’s unique fountains and waterway systems. In spring, the sound of flowing water harmonizes with birdsong, creating a peaceful atmosphere. The “Weber Mansion” at the park’s center is an artwork itself. Its curved roof, colorful tiles, and sculptures depicting mythological animals evoke Gaudí’s works.
If visiting with children, don’t miss the park’s “Zoo.” Filled with sculptures of mythical creatures from Weber’s imagination, this space is enough to stimulate any child’s imagination. Art workshops for children are held every weekend during spring, making this especially recommended for family travelers.
Thun and the Aare River: Romantic Riverside Walks in Switzerland
Thun, located just 30 minutes by train from Interlaken, is Switzerland’s little jewel. The walking path along the Aare River shows its most beautiful face during spring.
Starting from Thun’s old town, this path extends about 2 km along the riverside, with benches and small parks available for rest. From late March to early April, cherry blossoms paint the riverside in vibrant colors. The cherry blossom tunnel near Schloss Schadau reminds visitors of Japan’s famous sakura spots.
Special boat tours operate from the Aare Quay in spring. Taking an eco-friendly solar-powered boat onto Lake Thun allows you to appreciate the contrast between the surrounding Alpine peaks and the blue lake. On clear days, you can clearly see the Jungfrau, Eiger, and Mönch peaks.
For an authentic local experience, visit “Schwimmbad Thun” on the Aare riverbank. This outdoor pool opens in May, but even if you don’t swim, enjoying a coffee from the riverside café while gazing at the Alps completes a perfect spring day in Thun.
Lugano’s Monte Brè: Art-Infused Walking Trails
Lugano, the center of the Italian-speaking Ticino region in southern Switzerland, is called the “Swiss Riviera” for its Mediterranean climate influence. Spring arrives earlier here than in other Swiss regions, with colorful flowers and warm sunshine appearing from early March.
A must-visit in Lugano is the Art Trail on Monte Brè. Starting from the summit, reachable in about 15 minutes by cable car from downtown Lugano, this trail perfectly combines art and nature.
The trail passes through Brè Village and follows slopes overlooking Lake Lugano. Works by local artists are installed throughout, creating the feeling of walking through an outdoor art museum. The installations by Beato Penzini and Luigi Toma exemplify modern art in harmony with nature.
At “Ristorante Vetta,” located mid-trail, you can taste regional specialties like risotto and minestrone. Lunch on the terrace overlooking Lake Lugano and surrounding mountains creates a special experience.
The highlight of the Art Trail is “Parco degli Olivi.” This park, set among centuries-old olive trees, hosts special exhibitions during spring. Experience the Mediterranean atmosphere while appreciating local artists’ works among the olive groves.
Montreux in Spring: Peace Offered by Lake Geneva
Montreux, situated at the eastern end of Lake Geneva, is the center of the “Swiss Riviera.” Though famous for its summer jazz festival, spring Montreux offers quiet and peaceful charm.
To properly experience Montreux’s beauty, I recommend the Lakeside Promenade. This approximately 4km path from Montreux train station to Château de Chillon is also called the “Flower Path.” From late March through May, thousands of tulips, daffodils, and hydrangeas bloom along both sides, creating a brilliant flower pathway.
The gardens around Montreux Quay were meticulously designed with English garden influences. The vibrant flowerbeds surrounding the Freddie Mercury statue create one of Montreux’s iconic spring landscapes.
At “La Rouvenaz” restaurant located mid-promenade, you can taste fresh fish from Lake Geneva. Féra fish dishes enjoyed with local white wine while overlooking the lake will become a delicious memory of your spring Montreux trip.
Upon reaching Château de Chillon, visit the castle’s secret garden, specially opened for spring. This space recreates a medieval herb garden with various medicinal plants like lavender, rosemary, and sage. The panoramic view of Lake Geneva and the Alps from the castle walls provides the perfect conclusion to your Montreux journey.
Conclusion: Switzerland’s Spring, A Special Experience
Switzerland’s spring possesses a unique charm unlike any other country. The coexistence of snow-covered Alpine peaks with blooming flowers creates a unique landscape; cities awakening from winter’s silence regain their energy, and mild temperatures are perfect for enjoying it all.
